6 Reasons Why People Avoid The Dentist

Going to the dentist, while imperative, isn’t always seen as such.

In fact, many think of the dentist in a negative context. However, it is rare that people despise going to the dentist for no reason at all.

Some common reasons for not attending biannual dental visits include:

#1 Costs

One of the most common causes people stray away from the dentist is because of the hefty costs.

Those without a dental insurance plan are more likely to skip out on the dentist. In fact, many of these folks would rather orally suffer than pay for dental treatment. This is a scary thought considering our oral health is tied to our overall health.

However, what’s important to note is that spending money at the dentist saves one money in the long-run. As a dental patient, you are keeping your oral health tidy to avoid future health problems, pain, and further dental and medical costs.

#2 Dental anxiety

Fear of the dentist can be due to many reasons. Some feel uneasy with the sounds of dental tools while others suffer from a state of humiliation and distress when a dentist works on their mouth. Many even develop dental anxiety after having a painful cleaning or treatment.

Those with dental anxiety can talk to their dentist regarding dental sedation or other options for relieving stress during their visit. Having a someone you are comfortable to be in the room with you or listening to music to block out the sound of dental tools are other options that may help.

#3 A bad dental experience

A bad experience at the dentist often plays hand-in-hand with dental anxiety but not always. Some are left with a bad taste in their mouth because of a bad dental visit or service. Dentists or hygienists that are snobby or critical of patients, rough dental cleanings, or a bad overall experience can lead some to despise dental appointments.

The critical thing to remember is that there are plenty of great dentists out there to choose from. Finding the right office and dentist can be a piece of cake for some. However, for others, it may take some time to experiment with different options. We genuinely believe there is a dentist out there for everyone!

#4 Time

Time is money, as they always say. The same goes when it comes to attending dental visits if it is keeping one from working. While dental visits don’t usually last long, those with faulty oral health will be sitting in a dentist chair for longer. Some find that the time to get through appointments is “not worth it,” mainly if the meeting can only be during work or school hours. Inconvenience is familiar with some dental offices.

Remember, that there are dental offices out there that offer extended and even weekday hours. Find the dental office that suits you and your schedule best. Here at Hawaii Family Dental, we understand the frustrations around scheduling a dental visit. For that reason, we offer both extended and weekday hours.

#5 Failure to see the dentist as an essential part of good health

Some just don’t understand the importance of getting their teeth cleaned and inspected by a dental professional twice a year. Even for those with poor oral health, it can seem as if the health of our gums and teeth play a little role in our general health. However, it’s quite the opposite.

Educating oneself on the importance of dental hygiene, check-ups, and oral health is vital. Going to the dentist means better health and potentially early detection and treatment of oral-related problems such as cavities, oral cancer, gum disease, and more.

#6 Believing their oral health is already “top notch” and doesn’t require dental check-ups

Those who are already happy or unbothered by their current oral standing may consider dental check-ups pointless. They believe they’ve got their oral health handled on their own and didn’t require professional cleanings or exams.

Although, it is vital that every individual has the opportunity to attend dental appointments as our oral health may be at risk long before we are even aware of it.
