Our dentists tell us to brush and floss twice a day in addition to swishing and rinsing our mouth with mouthwash as our daily oral hygiene routine, but did you know that most of our oral bacteria (and one of the biggest sources of our bad breath) is present on our tongues?
For this reason, it’s also a good idea to utilize a device known as a tongue scraper as part of our hygiene routine.
While many toothbrushes have a bumpy back on the head of the brush to clean your tongue with, a tongue scraper is actually much different and more effective in cleaning your tongue.
What exactly is a tongue scraper, and how do you use one?
Many tongue scrapers are shaped much like a horseshoe and literally scrapes (It doesn’t hurt – Don’t worry!) the top of your tongue to rid of a thick layer of oral bacteria. That’s right, oral bacteria that just sits and thrives on your tongue – Yuck!
This device is meant just for that purpose. This helps to promote fresher breath and a much cleaner mouth. Now you can probably see why these devices are so helpful!
Scraping your tongue is typically best done in the morning after you wake up when your mouth contains the most oral bacteria. This is also when a film of oral bacteria forms on your tongue. You really only need to scrape your tongue once or twice a day, or whenever necessary.
Tongue scrapers are used by holding the device with the handles facing outwards your mouth, and starting from the back of the tongue, you lightly scrape the top of your tongue all the way to the tip. Lift and repeat. Five or six scrapes (or swipes, if that sounds better) should get the job done.
Ideally, wash the device between swipes, and thoroughly wash after use. Your tongue should not be irritated or in pain after use. Do NOT share a tongue scraper with anyone else!
Where can I buy a tongue scraper?
You can purchase your very own tongue scraper at your local convenience store at the oral hygiene aisle along with the toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. If for some reason stores in your area don’t carry them, they can always be purchased online. If that isn’t convenient for you, you can try asking a local dentist where you can find one, and they might just know.
Overall, tongue scrapers are great devices. While most of the population do not utilize one, or even know what they are, these are tools that should be apart of everyone’s hygiene routine if a healthier mouth and fresher breath is important. Best of all, these are a very affordable investment and are devices that only need to be purchased once and can be reused over and over again.
