Are you one of the many people who have trouble making flossing part of their daily routine? We get it! The busier life gets, the harder it is to stay on top of any routine. In honor of National Flossing Day on November 23rd, we’re here with tips that will help you create a daily flossing habit.

#1 Write it Down!

If making a daily flossing a habit is your goal, write it down. People who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them. A psychology professor at Dominican University in California found that people are 42 percent more likely to achieve goals just by writing them down. So write it in a fat Sharpie pen and stick it to your bathroom mirror. Commit!

#2 Try Something New

Maybe you’re stuck in a rut. If you hate the old flossing routine, mix things up! A new approach to flossing with the Waterpik or Airfloss. These handheld tools use water or air to clean between the teeth. The Waterpik’s design attaches the device to a water reservoir with a cord; the Airfloss is cordless and some say a bit less messy. Studies have shown both to be effective at cleaning. Cheaper options like interdental flossers (think mini toothbrush) are also effective ways to eliminate plaque and build up.

#3 Stay on Track with an App

You might already be using an app to track your daily calories or log steps throughout your day. So why not use one to get flossing? Habit-tracking apps let you track your progress and set reminders. Apps aren’t your thing? Well, you can also set timers and reminders on your smartphone or computer to keep you accountable.

#4 Create a Plan for Obstacles

Despite your best intentions, there are bound to be days (or nights) you forget the routine. Tuck a travel-size floss in your gym bag, your car console, your desk at work and even in the bedside table. No matter where you are in your day, there’s simply no excuse NOT to floss.
