Did You Know...

Most children lose their first around the age of 6.

Appointments are available within 5 days

Your Child's First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children see a Pediatric Dentist before their first birthday or when their first teeth come in. Dental problems can begin early and we know children need healthy teeth to speak and chew food! Please schedule with any pediatric dentist near you.

Meet You and Your Child

The first step is to meet you and your child! We'll ask a couple of basic questions regarding your child's oral health and answer any questions you may have. You're welcome to accompany your child throughout their appointment.

Exam and Cleaning

Depending how old your child is, exams usually involve looking around the gums, teeth, jaws, and bite for healthy growth and development. Your child's visit also includes a gentle cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and stains.

Schedule Your Next Appointment

If your child's teeth are healthy, you'll schedule another visit in six months. If something was found, your dentist will provide recommendations and help you schedule a follow-up appointment.

Have Questions? We Have Answers!

I’m pregnant. Should I see the dentist?

Regular checkups and healthy dental habits can help prevent conditions from developing or worsening. Although not all mothers experience these, some experience pregnancy gingivitis, an inflammation of your gums caused by hormonal changes. Your gums may become sensitive or bleed, developing into a more severe form of gum disease.

Pregnant moms are also at an increased risk of tooth decay and cavities. Morning sickness can expose your teeth to increased acids, which can eat away at your enamel. Please tell us if your pregnant when you check-in.

How do I take care of newborn gums?

When your newborn first flashes that gummy smile, that’s a sign that it’s time for you to begin their dental health journey. Because newborns don’t have oral bacteria, your primary focus at this stage is to prevent their mouths from full colonization. That means not sharing any utensils and avoiding cross-usage.

Aside from preventive measures, parents can also start their kids on their oral hygiene routine by cleaning gums with a soft cloth and water. That way, even if their babies contract oral bacteria, this doesn’t mean instant colonization.

When do all the baby teeth come in?

During the first few years of your child’s life, all 20 baby teeth will push through the gums, and most children will have their full set of these teeth in place by age three. A baby’s front four teeth usually erupt or push through the gums at about six months of age. As their teeth erupt, some babies may become fussy, sleepless and irritable, lose their appetite, or drool more than usual.

Can my kid brush their own teeth?

Children typically don’t develop the skills to brush effectively until they are 7 years old or until they can sweep a floor without missing any spots. Continue helping your child brush their teeth helps them practice!

Why visit the dentist when my child has never had cavities?

Regular dental visits help your child stay cavity-free. Teeth cleanings remove debris that build upon the teeth, irritate the gums and cause decay. Hygiene instructions improve your child’s brushing and flossing, leading to cleaner teeth and healthier gums.

My kid still sucks their thumb. Does it matter?

If your child is 5 and over, sucking their thumb can pose problems with the proper growth of the mouth and teeth. The pressure can lead to crooked front teeth, resulting in dental problems such as overbite, along with general bite and spacing problems.

Dr. Lee is a great listener and always provides helpful advice on dental care. I like the fact that he’s down-to-earth and addresses my concerns as a parent. From my observation, my son had a pleasant experience and he seemed relaxed during our recent visit. He was especially happy to hear he doesn’t have any cavities! I would highly recommend this office to all of my family members and friends.

My daughter’s braces were really bothering her, and we were grateful to find a clinic that could get us in quickly. The team took excellent care of her; everything was handled fast and with such patience. My daughter felt comfortable throughout the visit, and we left with her braces feeling much better. Highly recommend this dental clinic for anyone who needs prompt, caring orthodontic help!

For many years, Dr. Lindsay Taira has been far more than simply my doctor. She has been someone I could trust to consistently place quality, precision, and patient care above everything else. Every visit reflects genuine attention to detail, thoughtful communication, and a level of professionalism that inspires confidence. What I appreciate most is that Dr. Taira never rushes through treatment. And i had many treatments under her care . She approaches each procedure with micro-precision attention, ensuring the treatment patient gets is done properly rather than simply completed quickly. That dedication is increasingly rare in Hawaii and deserves recognition. One good example from my own experience: After my braces were recently removed, I was still struggling with leftover orthodontic cement on several teeth. During my visit i menthioned this , Dr. Taira immediately recognized my discomfort as a patient. Instead of asking me to schedule another appointment or directing me back to the orthodontic department, she personally took the time to carefully polish away the remaining cement herself. She certainly could have referred me elsewhere, but she chose to help in that very moment. To me, that is the mark of a true doctor. It wasn't simply about treating teeth. It was about seeing a patient's concern, taking ownership, and making sure I left the office cared for. That genuine compassion and willingness to go beyond what was expected left a lasting impression on me.Her kindness, her talent, and unwavering commitment to her patients have helped preserve not only my smile, but also my confidence in seeking dental care. After many years under her care, I can say without hesitation that Dr. Lindsay Taira exemplifies the highest standards of dentistry. I am sincerely grateful for everything she has done for me and would recommend her to anyone looking for exceptional dental care.— K K.

August 4, 2026, another OUTSTANDING teeth cleaning with dental hygienist Christy Murashige. She explained every step she would be performing to clean my teeth. She listened carefully and answered all my questions. The cleaning began with pumice polish, ultrasonic, pick and ended with fluoride. I appreciate the frequent fresh water rinses. She is a professional and seems to have a passion for her craft. The billing and front desk receptionist (Sorry, I forget her name) is super helpful and friendly. I actually look forward to my next cleaning session in early 2027. Mahalo! Two recent EXCELLENT experiences at Hawaii Family Dental, Kihei office. Both started with the professional front office team. Answering my questions and showing compassion explaining scheduling, insurance and payments. The January 16 teeth cleaning was with dental hygienist Christy Murashige. She is a great professional and helped put my dental anxiety at ease. Christy explained each step and ensured I was comfortable, ensuring I was not in pain at any time. We need more hygienist like Christy! My next appointment was February 7th with Dr. Jeff Thomas. He is also very professional and reassuring. He repaired a failed filling (Filling was old, not originally installed by HFD) and made sure there was no pain. He kept the communication open and also explained every part of the procedure. HFD is lucky to have these two professionals and the team of dental assistants and office staff. I will highly recommend this office to everyone. Mahalo!
