The teeth are a very important aesthetic and functional component. For that reason, misaligned, overcrowded, and improperly-placed teeth are a big deal for many.
Undoubtedly, ill-maintained teeth can ruin a person’s smile. In turn, a person’s confidence may come crashing down as a result. This only proves how critical it is to take proper care of one’s teeth.
Here are some tips to properly care for your smile:
#1 Avoid sugary foods and drinks.
For beautiful teeth, it’s important to refrain from consuming sugary foods and beverages. The acid present in these types of foods can erode the enamel of the tooth.
The latter foods can also discolor the teeth giving them a yellowish, brownish, or darker shade. Consuming much of these can also lead to tooth decay.
#2 Avoid brushing right after eating.
This practice is a common problem for many. People think that it is best to brush the teeth right after eating so that germs and foods remnants can be eliminated sooner than later.
Little do people know that this can actually eliminate more than just the residue of the foods consumed. Without waiting for at least half an hour, the layers of the tooth enamel can be removed as well. Instead, wait about 20 to 30 minutes before brushing, especially after consuming something acidic.
#3 Consume foods that can strengthen the teeth.
Take into consideration that not all foods can erode or damage the teeth. Pick foods that are loaded with vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium to strengthen the tooth enamel. Meanwhile, onions are known to combat bacteria.
#4 Always use a tongue scraper to clean the tongue.
The accumulation of bacteria on the tongue is one of the main causes of halitosis. So, instead of just merely brushing the tongue using a toothbrush, a tongue scraper can better remove the foul odor of the mouth.
#5 Have your teeth whitened at least twice a year.
Excessive consumption of certain foods and beverages can discolor the teeth greatly. Coffee, tea, tomato sauce, dark juices, and soy sauce are examples.
Luckily, with the help of at-home bleaching systems, there are effective solutions to successfully treat stained teeth. These are affordable and usually easy to use.
#6 Change your toothbrush regularly, preferably every three months.
It is imperative to change the toothbrush every 3 months, even if it is still in good condition. However, it is advisable to replace your toothbrush immediately if you get sick. Additionally, replace your toothbrush sooner if the bristles show signs of damage.
#7 Store your toothbrush in a clean storage area.
Consider rinsing your toothbrush with warm water after every use. Store it in a drawer or cabinet. Keep it in an upright position to allow it to dry completely.
#8 Visit the dentist at least twice a year.
The average patient should go to the dentist for a cleaning every six months.
